MORE ABOUT ME

When I was 17, I had this super cool idea to retrofit commercial drones for combat.

I talked about it heartily in a scholarship interview as one of my biggest motivations.

I later learned that the idea didn't come from careful foresight so much as from hypomania.

When that happens, my thoughts move fast, everything feels exciting, and my creativity spikes. But my judgment doesn't always keep up.

I also learned that I wasn't too crazy after all, looking at the situation in Ukraine.

Ok, I'm not done.

I didn't get the scholarship, which isn't surprising looking back. What stayed with me was the lesson: ideas aren't valuable just because they're novel or look cool; it's the responsibility behind them.

Since then, my philosophy around technology has shifted - from asking what can be built to asking who it helps, who it could hurt, and whether I'm in the right headspace when I decide to work on something.

< THINGS I REMEMBER FROM COLLEGE />

Like most people, I went to college. Engineering school, to be exact — clearly a bold choice made by a much more optimistic version of Ed.

But instead of learning cool, useful real-world skills, I mostly collected soul-crushing assignments and took stressful exams — which I still hate despite being the proverbial "A-student".

There, I watched as my dreams were gently but repeatedly stepped on. And of course, there were group projects... where I met guys who had mastered the art of "strategic incompetence."

I learned it's not just a concept, but a lifestyle some people proudly commit to. They somehow still got the same grade, anyway.
